Fujimoto Sou: Home

Introduction

Sou Fujimoto is a prominent Japanese architect known for his innovative and often unconventional designs that blur the boundaries between architecture and nature. Born in 1971 in Hokkaido, Japan, he graduated from the University of Tokyo and established his own design studio, Sou Fujimoto Architects, in 2000.

Fujimoto's work is characterized by a focus on the relationship between people and their environment, often incorporating elements of transparency, lightness, and modularity. He gained international recognition for projects such as the "Serpentine Pavilion" in London (2013), which featured a delicate, lattice-like structure, and the "Musashino Art University Library" in Tokyo, known for its open, flexible spaces.

His work seeks a new order for architecture that builds on Japanese notions of lightness, transparency and formless form. What often results are clusters and constellations of spaces and spatial relationships, and multiple layers and levels that redefine building elements—floors become steps, and vice versa; walls and spaces bleed into each other; rooms act more like platforms—while lending a sense of open-endedness to one’s experience of these spaces. Examples include his "House K", "House N" and "House NA", in Japan.

His designs often explore concepts of space and how architecture can enhance human experiences, making them integral to the surrounding landscape. Fujimoto has also been involved in academia, teaching architecture and contributing to discussions on design philosophy. His innovative approach has earned him numerous awards and accolades in the field of architecture.
