Inheriting the legacy of the 1940s, Hong Kong Cantonese films in the early 1950s kept making fantasy martial arts films, melodramas, comedies, and Cantonese opera films, leading to the growth of diverse film genres, techniques, and talented individuals. During the early and mid-1960s, Cantonese films had a successful period with a large output. As the market for Mandarin films expanded, Cantonese films experienced a significant decrease in production. In the meanwhile, experienced filmmakers tried to produce carefully constructed Cantonese pieces. In the late 1960s, Cantonese films aimed to appeal to young viewers with stylish urban dramas, energetic youth films featuring music and dance, and socially aware works addressing issues faced by rebellious or troubled youth.
