Irene Chou (1924 Shanghai - 2011 Australia) was a prominent figure and a leader in the New Ink Painting Movement in Hong Kong. After moving to Hong Kong in 1949, she studied under master ink painters, including Lui Shou-kwan, and rose to prominence in the 1970s. Following personal losses, Chou turned to painting as a therapeutic outlet, developing a unique style characterized by dynamic lines and cosmic motifs. Her innovative approach to traditional ink painting has significantly influenced the modern ink art scene both regionally and internationally.
The M+ Collection features several of her notable pieces, such as "Movement II" (1985) "Impact II" (1977) and "Abstract" (1992), showcasing her unique artistic style and contribution to the global art scene.
